“Hello Everyone,
I want to let you all know that I will be arriving with a team of veterinarians and vet technicians in November to assist at the spay and neuter clinic. This will be our sixth time helping out at the clinic and we are reallyChip28129.jpg looking forward to being there. I have one team coming to help out at the clinic in Guayabitos Nov14-17 and a second team helping out at the Las Varas clinic Nov 21-24. My clinic in Victoria BC has fundraised during the summer to help pay for the clinic in Guayabitos and Dr Carla Bell’s veterinary clinic in Sooke BC has raised money to help pay for their second sponsored clinic in Las Varas. Dr Bell cannot join us as she recently had her first child, but she sends her best wishes to all the volunteers.
There will also be a 2 man film crew coming down from Victoria for these clinics. They hope to get enough footage to make a short documentary about the work done by JBAR, PEACE and our Mexi-Can Vet Project in Mexico. This should be an interesting time. See you all very soon and thanks for your support volunteering at the clinics.”

These clinics have helped the Guayabitos community animals and their owners, and the Jaltemba bay area to keep1580.jpg the stray dog and cat population down, also helping with health and wellness. Even over the last couple of years the difference is very noticeable on the streets in La Penita and Guayabitos.
The Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue has helped to make a huge difference in the pet population, helping families to get their animals spayed and neutered, who otherwise could not and finding homes for stray animals.
Thanks to  Sue & Del Moss for hosting again, and all of the volunteers and the Jaltemba Ban Animal Clinic for all you do!

Mexico Honors “The Hero Kids” on September 13th

The Heroic Defense of Chapultepec Castle

Guayabitos is known for celebrations, shopping and relaxing and playing on the beaches of the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico. And on September 13, there is a celebration that can be referred to as the “Hero Kids” or Ninos Heroes de Chapultepec, and also on the late night of September 15th is known as the “The Scream of Dolores” (Grito de Delores). Some may think this word translates to “cry” however, “Grito” means scream.
This was the beginning of the armed conflict in search of freedom, that started on September the 16.

September 27, after 11 years of armed conflict, the consummation of Mexican Independence was reached, and Mexico Independence Day created, and another Mexican celebration that can be found celebrated in Guayabitos Mexico.

Ninos Heroes de Chapultepec

About 165 years ago that the intervention war between Mexico and the United States of America was taking place.  One date that holds a huge and proud and sentiment to Mexicans is September the 13, the commemoration and mournful anniversary, of the “Ninos Heroes de Chapultepec”, whom defended the Chapultepec Castle and is considered an example of patriotism and bravery, mainly because there where young kids. this gives you an idea of why this is so important for Mexico and the Mexicans.

Back in 1847, USA and Mexico where immersed in a war, after the Texas separation and the attempt of USA, to expand their territories.
AntonioFile:Iglesia de la Colonia Niños Heroes de Chapultepec.jpg Lopez de Santa Anna was in in charge of of the armed forces at Mexico Capital. He noticed that Chapultepec Castle was a critical point for the preservation of the capital. The castle sat atop a 200-foot (60 m) tall slope which back in the day was being utilized as the Mexican Military Academy. General Nicolás Bravo, However, they had less than 1000 soldiers (832 Total which include two hundred 10th Infantry, 115 Querétaro Battalion, 277 Mina Battalion, 211 Union Battalion, 27 Toluca Battalion and also 42 la Patria Battalion with seven guns) to maintain the hill, including 200 cadets, some as young as 13 yrs old. A gradual slope from the castle down to the Molino del Rey formed an attracting attack position.

According to military files at the General National Archives in Mexico City, Chapultepec Castle was only defended by 400 men, 300 from the Batallón de San Blas under the guide of Lieutenant Colonel Felipe Xicoténcatl, along with the castle’s garrison of 100 people, which includes the cadets. The extra Mexican troops were placed in external walled redoubts of the castle to safeguard a large rectangular portion of ground in the front of the castle on its own. This section was protected by high walls not to mention was nearly three-quarters of a mile long by one-quarter mile deep. This location was critical to the security of the castle because the slope of the hill from the west was so fragile, it also encompassed the south eastern slopes that happen to be moderate in comparison to the steep escarpments on the east and north. In addition the source of water for the castle was located in this area.

The battle left a severely damaged Mexican army, without a commander or a major military leader to tell them what to do. The kids, between 13-20 years old decided to leave the castle in a safe route, and Six stayed to the end.

Juan de la Barrera age 19, born in Mexico City son of a army general.
Juan Escutia age 17 from Tepic the capital of todays state of Nayarit.
Francisco Márquez age 13, from Guadalajara Jalisco.
Agustín Melgar age 18, born in the north state of Chihuahua.
Fernando Montes de Oca age 18,  born in Mexico City
Vicente Suárez age 14, is from the state of Puebla.

These young boys decided to stay and hold the USA forces as much as they could to let the other survivors leave the castle. That is why every September the 13, the “Ninos Heroes of Chapultepec” are remembered and hold the title of Heroes.  One of the most remarkable scenes at this battle was as the battle was close to the end, the USA army forces where leading to take the Mexican flag which was  situated in one of the Highness parts of the castle to  prevent it from being taken. It is said that one of the cadets,  (different versions differ between Juan Escutia & Agustin Melgar), went all the way up, took the flag and wrapped himself in it and jumped to avoid USA soldiers from taking possession of the flag.

Their bodies are buried in front of the Chapultepec castle in silver and glass coffins, and it is there, and throughout Mexico, every year they receive the love and respect of the military, politicians and the people.

On March 5, 1947, a few months before the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Chapultepec, U.S. President Harry S. Truman placed a wreath at the monument and stood for a few moments of silent reverence. Asked by American reporters why he had gone to the monument, Truman said,”Brave men don’t belong to any one country. I respect bravery wherever I see it.”

Mexicans are a proud people. They love to laugh and celebrate everything like the “Ninos Heroes de Chapultepec” with loud music, and a lot of tequila! Its a fun party for everyone, and Guayabitos knows how to celebrate!
In Guayabitos, its fun to walk the avenue and shop. There are so many great shops with fabulous pricing, and the Guayabitos beaches on the Riviera Nayarit are great for swimming and playing.
